Buddhism

I took this photo of the deer and the dharma wheel at Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet. The deer are references to the fact that the Buddha gave his first teachings in a deer park in India. The eight-spoked dharma wheel represents the turning of the wheel of truth. The spokes represent the noble eightfold path of:

  1. Right view
  2. Right intention
  3. Right speech
  4. Right action
  5. Right livelihood
  6. Right effort
  7. Right mindfulness
  8. Right concentration

Buddhism has always appealed to me. I feel a resonance with the teachings. It teaches that desire is the cause of all our suffering. Eliminate desire and you eliminate suffering. All desire – not just physical desire. Buddhism is one of the many paths to truth. It advocates harmlessness and that can only be a good thing in my view. It wishes peace for all sentient beings. Compassion is the underpinning of the dharma. Including compassion for oneself.
