Suffer the children…

23 06 2008

I read an article this morning about the plight of many children in Myanmar.

I have no children of my own but have always cared passionately about what happens to children – particularly in less affluent countries.

I used to be a teacher but left as I didn’t believe in the ‘system’. But I care passionately about education for all. Appropriate educational opportunities should be freely available for all the world’s children.

Then somebody sent me the video that I published in the preceding post. A young woman, still a child, who urges us to save her future.

We are failing the children of the world. So many lack food, clean water, shelter, education. So many live in fear and without love, support and protection. We are taking away their future too, with our greed.

What can be done about this? We are all responsible for protecting the children on this earth. How can we change this situation? What can we, as individuals do? That is what I am trying to work through right now. I have sponsored children in developing nations since I was 18. I donate money to appeals. I have done voluntary work with children in India. But somehow it is not enough.

What can we do? Does anybody have any solutions? Do we just stand by and watch them suffer?
