From the sublime to the ridiculous

2 07 2008

Yesterday I posted about my dream to go trekking in winter in the Himalayas (Ladakh) to look for the elusive snow leopard. Tough, high altitude, freezing cold and really roughing it.

Yesterday afternoon, a friend and I booked a cabin on a luxury South Pacific cruise in August. Relaxed, sea level, hot and humid and really living it up.

Quite a difference don’t you think?

If money was no object and I had to choose one over the other, the snow leopards would win hands down. But that trip is too expensive. The cruise is a bargain (due to it being a last minute booking to fill the ship) and is only 8 days. I don’t need to use too much of my leave and it is in a month’s time. I feel like a break from work as it will be a quiet time.

I’ve never been on a cruise before. It has never appealed to me in the slightest – I like to ‘do’ things on holiday. I will get to see Vanuatu and New Caledonia, and I’ve never been to the South Pacific before. Four days sailing and three days exploring islands. I think I can cope. They have a gym on board so I can maintain my newly gained fitness level. And just sitting on deck reading a book might be a nice thing to do.

My friend has been on many cruises before and loves them. But there is no way she’d come on my snow leopard adventure – she likes her luxury. In fact everyone I know (apart from P) is into luxury travel, not adventure travel. That is why I end up travelling alone usually.

P and I are going bushwalking on Sunday, in a beautiful area close to the city. You climb steeply up to a ridge giving stunning views over the city to the sea in one direction, and inland through gum filled valleys in the other. He tells me that we are unlikely to spot any snow leopards though :-) Might just have to make do with a few kangaroos and koalas instead.

Oh and I am getting my camera fixed at the moment – it had to be sent off to Sydney. Hopefully I’ll have it back to take photos of my cruise and the islands I visit.
